“Utsuwa” (Ceramics) Gifts for Father’s Day

Hello, this is Eri.

Father’s Day is coming soon.

Worldwide, it’s a day to express gratitude to fathers. Compared to Mother’s Day, it often carries a subtler tone — a day to quietly show appreciation.

On such a day, gifts that “feel like something one would pick up in daily life” or that reflect the giver’s good taste are perfect.

In this post, I’ll introduce differences between Father’s Day in Japan and abroad, and present some gift ideas in the form of beautiful Mino–ware ceramics.

In Japan, Father’s Day is observed on the third Sunday of June.

It was introduced similarly to Mother’s Day from America. The idea began when a woman requested that a day be set aside to honor fathers. Over time, it was adopted here. In many countries, the celebration falls on the same day, but the style and gift choices differ by culture.

For example, in the U.S., BBQ gear or DIY tools are popular; in the U.K., simple cards or beer are common gifts. The ways people say “thank you” may vary, but across cultures, gifts that support daily life tend to be appreciated.

Rather than a grand gesture, something that a father might casually pick up in everyday life is likely to leave a lasting impression.

Here are 5 recommended “utsuwa” gifts from Mino-ware for Father’s Day:

  1. Beer cup (biiru kappu)
A mug that fits comfortably in the hand and whose glaze and texture enhance the evening drink ritual.

  2. Soba choko (small bowl for soba broth)
Originally for soba sauce, but now also used for coffee, tea, or small side dishes — versatile and compact.

  3. Guinomi (sake cup)
Ideal for fathers who enjoy sake. Each piece has its own character and adds depth to the experience.

  4. Yunomi (tea cup)
A tea cup with a warm, hand-friendly shape and understated beauty—something to use every day.

  5. Small bowl set
Useful for side dishes, snacks, or desserts. A matching set of different sizes gives special meaning.

Each of these ceramics is carefully made by craftsmen in Gifu, the heart of Mino-ware production.

They are not flashy, but they carry presence and character.

I hope they become pieces your father reaches for in daily life.

This year for Father’s Day, why not choose a gift of ceramics that gently supports daily living?
