“Fukumi Tenbyō” by Taneya

Hello, this is Eri!

The other day, I visited Taneya’s facility La Collina in Ōmihachiman, Shiga Prefecture. The architecture in harmony with nature, the beautiful scenery, and the thoughtfully designed spaces made me feel as though I had stepped into a fairytale world.

What caught my attention there was this unique oil-can-shaped package.

Oil-can package of Fukumi Monaka

Inside is Taneya’s signature confection, Fukumi Monaka. What’s more, this canned version is exclusive to La Collina!

In a garage lined with antique vehicles, there is a gift shop where you can purchase this special version.

This is a type of monaka—a traditional Japanese sweet made with crispy wafer shells filled with red bean paste. What makes Fukumi Monaka fun is that it’s an “assemble-it-yourself” monaka—you put it together just before eating.

The steps are simple:

  1. Open the red bean paste packet,
  2. Place it between the two wafers,
  3. And enjoy the crisp texture and rich flavor of the bean paste.

This time, I placed it on a vividly colored Kutani ware plate.

Traditional wagashi and beautiful ceramics—both reflect Japan’s spirit of careful craftsmanship and transform an ordinary moment into something truly special.

If you’re traveling in the Kansai area, I highly recommend visiting La Collina Ōmihachiman. It’s not just a sweets shop—it’s a place where you can experience the artistry of confectionery.
