Hello, this is Eri!
July 7 is Tanabata, one of Japan’s traditional seasonal festivals.
According to legend, on this night, the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi—represented by the stars Vega and Altair—are allowed to cross the Milky Way and reunite just once a year. It’s a romantic story that has inspired countless celebrations across Japan.
On Tanabata, people write their wishes on colorful strips of paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo branches. Many also enjoy decorating with star motifs and ornaments inspired by the summer night sky.
The holiday is also a perfect time to add a touch of seasonal beauty to your dining table. A classic dish for Tanabata is somenn noodles, said to resemble the Milky Way itself.
Cool and smooth, somen is ideal for the hot, humid days of early summer—and its delicate appearance offers a refreshing visual delight as well.
Top your somen with star-shaped carrots or cucumber slices cut to resemble bamboo leaves for a light, elegant presentation full of summer charm.

At Miyake Ceramics, we’ve selected Mino ware pieces that are perfect for a Tanabata-inspired table setting:
- Star-shaped small bowls – Ideal for serving condiments such as chopped myoga, ginger, or shiso leaves.

- Bamboo leaf-shaped plates – Perfect for small appetizers or seasonal Japanese sweets.

- Soba cups with bamboo motifs – Great for serving dipping sauce with somen noodles.

- Bamboo leaf-shaped chopstick rests – Subtly add a sense of the season to your table.

By reflecting the season through your tableware, even an everyday meal can feel special.
On Tanabata night, why not enjoy this traditional festival with cool, refreshing Mino ware and a heart full of wishes?
